How To: Wash Your Favorite Baseball Hat

Give your favorite work/play hat a bath to keep your Significant Other happy !

I love wearing baseball hats, particularly the two well loved ones pictured above that I’ve worn for the last 5+ years, but every so often my lady will wrinkle her nose at me and point at my hat; I know it’s time to wash them.

Guide/Parts Compatibility:

While the detergent listed worked for my two hats, I cannot guarantee that your hat wont be damaged. Most likely it will not, since it’s a hat…

Time Required:

  • 0.25hrs

Complexity:

  • 1/10
  • Contributing Factors:
  • Must convince Significant Other that bowl will not be permanently tainted (if applicable).

Parts Needed:

  • Tide Pod, etc… (I’m sure you have some already, but if it’s time to restock you can use the link to support the site !)

Step1: Rinse Hat/be disgusted

Using warm water, rinse your hat in a 4qt or bigger bowl*. This was after only 6-12mo, mine were pretty gross.

*Ensure you seek permission from your Significant Other. Aviator4x4 not responsible for harm occurring if permission is not sought.

Step2: Add detergent

Drain out the rinse water and refill with warm water.

Add a Tide Pod or similar. I found it fascinating to see which parts dissolved first.

Step3: Gently scrub

Gently scrub your hat(s) inside and out with a scrub brush.

Parts to pay special attention to:

  • Behind the sweatband on the inside
  • Where the visor meets the front panels on outside
  • Around any patches/logos on outside

(I had to look up what those parts are actually called, because my lady laughed when I said where the bill meets the “head part”).

Step4: Soak

Allow your hat to soak in the detergent water for 10-15minutes. Yeah, it’s pretty gross. Still.

Step5: Rinse

Using warm water, rinse your hat in the bowl until the water runs clean without bubbles (2-3 times)

Step6: Allow to dry

Allow hats to air cool somewhere with airflow and indirect sunlight (don’t use a dryer !).

I wish I had taken better before pictures, but I’m sure my hats will continue to be well used and I’ll update with a before picture.
