Gear: Expedition Cigar Case

How to travel through harsh conditions with one of life’s great pleasures: cigars

I enjoy burning a cigar with friends or around a campfire, especially with a nice glass of bourbon, but they’re quite delicate. They can be damaged or destroyed by sunlight, humidity, or being crushed. I’ve been traveling with cigars for almost a decade now and have refined my setup to protect cigars against all of those while also carrying basic tools. For many years I traveled with a 5 Cigar Herf-A-Dor, but as soon as I added a butane lighter and guillotine cutter, it didn’t leave much room for the cigars themselves. I tried out a 10 Cigar Herf-A-Dor, putting the cigars on the bottom and tools on the top row, but the foam did not cooperate.

On AVEX2 my buddy PLEX, an avid cigar smoker, used a Pelican Ruck R40 and I was sold. I think it’s perfectly suited for the job and have taken it on three, many-night-multi-thousand mile expeditions along with several week long work trips with no complaints.

Why It works

The Pelican Ruck R40 has 3 compartments:

  • Lid: The orange soft rubber divider for the top holds one or two 69% Boveda packets while allowing them access to the entire box.
  • Middle: The slotted tray holds tools and protects the cigars. (It comes with velcro straps to organize items but I have removed them).
  • Bottom: Perfectly deep, with room for up to a 60 ring gauge cigar (the HC shade grown pictured is a 5.5″x50 Robusto)
Boveda pack in the lid, tools on the tray.
